Jan, one more note:
The synchronization signal transmitted over the cable includes both the sync "momemt" (leading edge of the pulse) and the master camera timestamp as a serial message. So the images acquired on two (or more) cameras will have exactly the same timestamp (the one from the "master") even as the internal clocks run at slightly different rate.
