Kevin,

with MPlayer on GNU/Linux you normally you do not need any special settings,
just run "mplayer rtsp://<camera_ip>". But depending on the (default) video
output settings in the mplayer it may fail to play if the camera frame size
is larger than the screen size.

What is the output from the mplayer when you enter such command in the
terminal?

For testing you may also try adding "-vo null" option - in that case MPlayer
will not output any video, but the frame counter should run.
