Yes. 
1. power on the camera
2. ~$ sudo minicom -c on
3a. Hit Enter - it should print "#", or type "dmesg". 
3b. If it's not doing anything - w/o terminating minicom powercycle the camera. And it should be printing.

If it's not responsive - I would check the cable.
